1 Colour and Softness

When the coconut gets pealed, the husk is still green when it gets chopped up; after a month it turns beige and orange.

We now speak of a young coco-husk product.

This is what we want for our animals, softness and comfort.

If we wait 4-6 weeks longer it turns brown, and as it ages, even more darker brown.

This is the old and hard stuff we don’t want to keep using as it irritates the animals when it’s dry and hard and even sharp sometimes.

2 Discolouration of water or snakes

Young Coco’s, tends to discolour water for a few weeks, this is normal because the husk is still fresh.

As it browns out and ages a little this stops!

This has nothing to do with the quality or how well the product was washed, only the age of the husk.

When it browns out and ages in the tub or terra the product gets harder and more wood-like, and then the tanine can’t come out no more.

Discolouration of snakes only happens with products that have a high concentration of fine dust. Only older Coco’s tends to do so, because when compressed, the wood-like hard chips produce more dust then soft younger product.

Also animals can get irritation and the small dust particles get caught between the scales.

Even when a product is properly washed sieved, compressing the husk makes it dusty again afterwards.

3 Usages and advantages odour/humidity

One of the best features about Coco’s is the smell! It absorbs all odours and will give you a clean and fresh feeling. No more smell of poo or ammonium. Sure you need to keep doing your routine of spotcleaning and change the bedding in time.

Cocohusk can absorb 8 times its weight in water, this is far more then any other bedding, wood chip, bark or paper can do.

The top of the bedding will always feel dry, so there is absolutely no risk for the animals.

The overall humidity level in your room will rise up to 60-80% which is perfect the well-being of your animals.

4 How it is made

After the husk is pealed of the nut and chopped up it drys and rest for about a month.

Then the product is washed 3 times with fresh water from a drilled well. Clean and fresh water gives a low EC-level, and this is necessary for the welfare of our animals.

After drying, the product gets blocked by a tunnelpress.

It’s always the same amount of husk that gets compressed, the volume of the block sometimes differs a few centimeters, this has to do with the percentage of water remaining in the husk, as you can’t compress water, a higher waterpercentage gives a bigger and more likely looser block. The tighter and often slimmer blocks just needs some more water when prepared, they will expend to the same volume.
